Announcing the launch our 9th video production

Dear Colleagues,

Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year from all of us at CBEC.

We are pleased to announce the release of our 9th educational video, “Between Hope and Despair,” which is now available for free streaming and downloading from our website – http://www.siut.org/bioethics/CBECProduction.html.

This video deals with ethical challenges that LMIC (Low and Middle Income Countries) with vulnerable populations can face in dealing with highly infectious, high mortality epidemics. It focuses on dilemmas healthcare-related professionals must contend with in light of limited existing medical resources and the struggle of local IRBs, while reviewing a proposal to test a vaccine, in balancing potential benefits versus harm to subjects and communities. The movie also highlights the ways in which cultural values and belief systems of affected communities can come into conflict with measures that scientists and researchers consider important.

Production of this video was undertaken as part of CBEC’s educational activities as a WHO Collaborating Centre of Bioethics. The East West Management Institute provided funding for the production.

We hope that like our previous videos, this production will also useful in bioethics teaching sessions across the world.  As always, we would welcome your feedback on this combined effort by our team.

With warm regards,

CBEC Faculty
